EAN-13 vs. UPC-A Barcodes: Global Retail Numbering & Checksum Standards

The Evolution of Retail Point-of-Sale Barcodes

Every physical product sold in supermarkets, retail chains, and ecommerce fulfillment centers uses a GS1 standard linear barcode. However, depending on where your product is manufactured and distributed, you will encounter either **UPC-A** or **EAN-13**.

1. Structure Comparison: 12 vs. 13 Digits

  • **UPC-A (Universal Product Code):** The standard in the United States and Canada since 1974. Consists of **12 numeric digits**:
  • * 1 digit: Number System Character
  • * 5 digits: Manufacturer Identification
  • * 5 digits: Item Number
  • * 1 digit: Modulo-10 Check Digit
  • **EAN-13 (International Article Number):** Adopted globally throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Consists of **13 numeric digits**:
  • * 2–3 digits: GS1 Country Prefix (e.g., 00–13 for USA/Canada, 40–44 for Germany, 50 for UK)
  • * 4–5 digits: Manufacturer ID
  • * 4–5 digits: Product Item Reference
  • * 1 digit: Modulo-10 Check Digit
**Note on Compatibility:** EAN-13 is a superset of UPC-A. A 12-digit UPC-A barcode can be transformed into an EAN-13 barcode simply by prefixing a leading zero (`0`). Modern optical point-of-sale scanners read both seamlessly.

2. How the Modulo-10 Checksum Works

The final digit of an EAN-13 barcode is mathematically calculated to ensure scanning accuracy and prevent misreads:

  1. Multiply each digit in an odd index position (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) by **1**.
  2. Multiply each digit in an even index position (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) by **3**.
  3. Sum all resulting products together.
  4. Calculate the remainder when dividing by 10 (Modulo 10).
  5. Subtract the remainder from 10. If the result is 10, the check digit is **0**.
