Frequently Asked Questions

Clear technical answers to help you design, test, and deploy with confidence.

How many digits does an EAN-13 barcode require?

An EAN-13 barcode encodes exactly 13 digits: 2–3 prefix digits (country/origin code), 4–5 manufacturer digits, 3–4 product digits, and 1 final Modulo-10 checksum digit.

What happens if I enter a 12-digit number?

If you enter a 12-digit sequence, our generator automatically computes the mandatory 13th checksum digit using the GS1 Modulo-10 formula and generates a certified code.

Where is EAN-13 accepted?

EAN-13 is accepted at virtually all supermarket, grocery, department store, and e-commerce point-of-sale checkout scanners across Europe, the UK, Latin America, Asia, Australia, and internationally.
